Calcium is used as calcium carbonate, calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide in sugar industry.
Application of these compounds involves neutralization, clarification, filter aid formation and generation of CO2.
Calcium is also used linked to ion exchange resins in industrial chromatographic applications.

Although calcium compounds are useful in sugar industry, the excess of calcium in sugars and solutions must be avoided.
The presence of calcium in sugar crystals increase its turbidity.

Calcium can be removed from sugar solutions through precipitation (adding phosphoric acid or a phosphate) or using ion exchange resins (softening).
